Client Stories: Spiritual Guidance
Building Inner Strength and Confidence
Rob was referred to me by a long-time client because he had expressed interest in working on several issues: his career ("identifying employment opportunities outside my comfort zone") leaving his job if it was the right thing to do; not getting the recognition he felt he deserved at work; having better communication at home as well as more fun in his personal life.
I asked Rob if he were a dog, which breed he would be. He knew he was a Labrador Retriever, which he described as: loyal, friendly, frisky, and fun. He also added that he'd like to develop the thicker skin and watchdog traits of a German Shepherd. Since we know that our assets become our liabilities when they are misapplied or overused, Rob and I discussed his tendency to be overly loyal and friendly (thinking of himself as a good soldier), and how much that prevented him from speaking up when he needed to.
Rob, I confess, was a model client: he had said he didn't want to take the easy way out, and only consider the obvious, and, indeed, he was very willing to stretch during our work together. He conducted structured interviews to learn more about himself, ventured into some spiritual learnings, and explored options he might otherwise not have noticed.
Having found a desirable, suitable, well-paying job, it soon came time to transition from his old company. Rob planned his exit strategy, stayed true to himself, and successfully managed "some thorny work-related issues."
As Rob began his new job, he used the same diligent approach, and looked at what he needed for success. He made good use of his previous learning and we brought in some new tools on management and intergenerational issues. He then set some new goals, which I have no doubt he will meet.
What I got from your coaching was confidence: new ways of seeing myself, a stronger belief in what is possible, and a better understanding of where and how I can improve; I found more pride in myself. I met all of my goals and pushed the envelope of my thinking, and was able to achieve all of above in a relatively short period of time, in a very supportive, yet continually challenging and stimulating environment
