Client Stories: Spiritual Guidance
Clarifying What Matters
Laurie came looking for a coach when she was a successful marketing VP. She wanted a better understanding of herself, better balance between her personal and professional lives, and an increased ability as a manager, to express criticism and "work more efficiently during times of high anxiety, stressful or pressured events."
It became clear that if Laurie took more of an opportunity to focus on herself and her needs, she would notice results in all of her areas of focus. Her first homework assignment, therefore, was to listen to her body, to follow its signals of fatigue, stress, and pleasure as well. In support of the latter, and her highly visual, creative style, Laurie enrolled in an art course. In time, she reported feeling "a lot more like myself," saying a bad day was not as bad and a good day was even better.
During this time, Laurie's mother, who has been diagnosed with cancer, was losing her tough battle, and unfortunately, died. As often happens, the loss clarified Laurie's sense of herself and what matters.
Today, Laurie is no longer working in marketing, but is making jewelry and selling it. She has changed her environment to live in a way that supports her health. She says that though the changes she's made did not come easy and at times felt awkward, she is glad she made them.
I have come to a true sense of appreciation for the coaching experience having worked with you. I came to you seeking answers to many questions...not only do I have a better understanding of my own inner workings but am beginning to see the light and I am enjoying its brightness. I would jot things down in a notebook after our time together, and found there were many golden nuggets that have kept me on a path—I am thankful for the clarity you continue to provide, albeit unknowingly.
